Emergency First Aid at Work for Schools (Blended Learning)

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is suitable for staff of all departments within schools who have responsibility or involvement in providing first aid and managing medical emergencies for both adults and children. This is a course for those who have operational involvement with health, safety, and first aid requirements in schools and similar settings.

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This course enables people in schools with responsibility for first aid to meet HSE, DfE, and Ofsted requirements with the flexibility of a blended learning approach (part classroom, part online). This course addresses both adult and child first aid, and successful completion of this course will result in the delegate receiving training to a recognised standard of competence, leaving your team fully confident in looking after each other and pupils alike. The online top-up is undertaken after the practical session, and this needs to be completed within 3 weeks.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 Provide a robust, HSE and Ofsted compliant blended learning first aid qualification for school staff.

 Understand the causes of unconsciousness and how to care for an unconscious casualty.

 Understand how to effectively manage incidents and ensure correct protocols are followed in the event of everyday school injuries (e.g., bumps, falls, nosebleeds).

 Know how to confidently perform Basic Life Support and manage choking for adults, children, and babies.

 Identify the key first aid priorities and understand the rules, regulations, and proper use of first aid kits.

 Know how to respond to serious medical emergencies, including asthma, anaphylaxis, and epilepsy, to reassure colleagues, pupils, and caregivers.

SUBJECTS COVERED:

Classroom (3-hour session at the Tomlinson Centre):

 First aid priorities.

 Managing incidents.

 Care of an unconscious casualty.

 Basic life support and choking (Adult, Child, and Baby).

 Automated External Defibrillation (AED).

 Practical assessments.

Online (to be completed by 3 weeks after the classroom session):

 Causes of unconsciousness.

 Asthma (including the use of inhalers).

 Anaphylaxis (including administering Auto-Injectors).

 Control of bleeding.

 Burns and scalds.

 Fractures, dislocations, sprains, and strains.

 Shock.

 First aid kits, rules, and regulations.

 Online assessment.

Key areas of study:

 Asthma emergencies (including the use of inhalers and holding "spare" emergency Salbutamol).

 Anaphylaxis (including administering Auto-Injectors).

 Automated External Defibrillation (AED).

 Typical day-to-day school injuries (bumps, falls, nosebleeds).

 Management of serious medical conditions such as epilepsy.

Facilitator: Aid Training

Practical assessments are conducted during classroom delivery, and a further online assessment is undertaken.

Delegates will be able to print or download a certificate of completion on successful completion of both elements. Certification is valid for 3 years and is HSE compliant.

Additionally, your trained team will have FREE access to our online refresher course, which is recommended annually by the HSE.

Fire Marshal Training for Schools

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is suitable for employees who have been designated as prospective Fire Marshals within their organisation. It is designed for those who require training in basic fire safety and need to understand the roles and responsibilities associated with the Fire Marshal position.

COURSE OVERVIEW:

This half-day classroom course equips your team with the skills to be effective Fire Marshals. Tailored to the needs of the prospective Fire Marshal, the training typically runs for four hours. It covers basic fire safety matters before moving into the specific roles and responsibilities of the Fire Marshal. Where suitable outdoor space is available, the course also includes the practical use of fire extinguishers. This course complies with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 Provide a comprehensive understanding of fire legislation and basic fire chemistry.

 Equip delegates with the knowledge to identify causes of fires and implement prevention strategies.

 Understand the correct procedures for firefighting and evacuation, including assembly points and drills.

 Familiarise delegates with emergency lighting, fixed firefighting installations, and fire alarms.

 Enable delegates to conduct routine fire safety inspections, maintain a fire log, and develop risk assessment awareness.

 Train delegates in the recognition and correct use of fire extinguishers (both theory and practical).

SUBJECTS COVERED:

 Fire legislation.

 The basic chemistry of fire and its differing classes.

 Firefighting procedures.

 Causes of fires and their prevention.

 Emergency lighting and fixed firefighting installations.

 Evacuation assembly points and fire drills.

 Fire alarms and fire hazards.

 Routine fire safety inspections and maintaining a fire log.

 Risk assessment awareness.

 Extinguisher recognition and use (theory and practical).

Facilitator: Aid Training

Assessment is continual throughout the course; there is no formal examination.

Delegates will receive an Aid Training certificate and an electronic course resource upon successful completion of the session.

Food Hygiene

This course addresses the food safety and hygiene needs. It focuses on identifying the ‘critical points’ in a process where food safety problems (or ‘hazards’) could arise and putting steps in place to prevent things going wrong.

Course objectives

• To underline employee’s responsibility for safeguarding the health of consumers.
• To ensure that the food served or sold is perfectly safe to eat.
• To enable participants to handle food safely.

Qualification gained

Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering Welfare.

This training is suitable for: 

• Anyone who prepares, handles or cooks food e.g. kitchen, nursery, childminders and playgroup staff.

Manual Handling

For all school staff who carry out manual handling, or who provide essential information about manual handling hazards and their control.

This course teaches learners techniques to lift, carry, push and pull objects safely within their individual capabilities. Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, employers are required to take appropriate steps to reduce the risk of injury to employees.

Course objectives

• To enable participants to undertake manual tasks safely.
• To enable participants to assist in manual handling risk assessments.

Qualification gained

Chartered Institute of Environmental Health Level 2 Certificate in Principles of Manual Handling.
