Adaptive Teaching

Led by the East London Research School, this programme is designed to empower educators with the knowledge and skills to enhance their teaching practices and create dynamic learning environments. This comprehensive training comprises two in-person training days and four webinars, offering a flexible and accessible approach to professional development.

The training curriculum places a strong emphasis on understanding the evidence that supports adaptive teaching. Participants will explore the latest research and theories in education, gaining insights into effective instructional strategies and pedagogical approaches. Through engaging with evidence, educators will develop a deeper understanding of the impact of adaptive teaching on student learning outcomes.

The programme will be tailored to spend time on aspects of adaptive teaching most relevant to school priorities for the cohort.

Key areas of the programme include;

Metacognition  - Metacognition and self-regulation approaches to teaching support pupils to think about their own learning more explicitly, often by teaching them specific strategies for planning, monitoring, and evaluating their learning.

Interventions are usually designed to give pupils a repertoire of strategies to choose from and the skills to select the most suitable strategy for a given learning task.

Self-regulated learning can be broken into three essential components:

  • cognition – the mental process involved in knowing, understanding, and learning

  • metacognition – often defined as ‘learning to learn’; and

  • motivation – willingness to engage our metacognitive and cognitive skills.

By incorporating metacognitive strategies into their teaching, educators can empower students to have and use a range of strategies to overcome learning challenges and therefore develop lifelong learning skills.

Language and literacy guidance - Educators will gain valuable insights and recommendations for supporting language development and literacy skills across various subject areas. With this knowledge, they can design inclusive lessons that meet the diverse needs of their students and foster language and literacy growth.

Making best use of Teaching Assistants - educators will look at evidence based guidance to make the best use of Teaching Assistants. Recommendations are based on the latest research examining the use of TAs in the classroom.

Special Educational Needs in mainstream - educators will explore the five evidence based recommendations to support children with SEND, providing school leaders with a starting point to review current approaches and practical ideas for implementation.

Effective professional development and implementation - educators will explore the evidence base for lasting professional growth and learn how to create meaningful and impactful development opportunities for themselves and their colleagues. Participants will look at the stages of effective implementation planning and be supported to create a plan to enable sustained improvements in teacher practice.

This course will teach senior leaders the necessary tools and knowledge to implement adaptive teaching strategies effectively understanding the evidence, leveraging metacognition, engaging in effective professional development, providing language and literacy support, and sustaining change, educators will be well-prepared to create engaging and dynamic learning experiences for their students.

Online sessions will be recorded and all resources shared via Padlet for Senior Leaders to use in school if desired.

Assessment Network

The Hackney Assessment Network is a group of school leaders responsible for assessment who meet to share best practice and explore current research in assessment. The network aims to support leaders in the development and evaluation of their assessment strategies, and to showcase local best practice. Focus is also given to explore developments within statutory assessment and to inform leaders about key publications, research, and guidance from the DfE and OFSTED, as well as leading research organisations.

Over the past few years, the network has welcomed guest speakers and experts across a range of different assessment themes, including Kate Jones (Retrieval Practice), Orlene Badu (Bias in Teacher Assessment), Jenny Short (Post-Covid 19 Curriculum Recovery), Adam Boxer and Nick Hart.

Since its inception by Jason Marantz, the network has developed into a fantastic opportunity for leaders to exchange knowledge and offer guidance to one another, working under the ethos that we learn best by collaborating with others.

Network Lead

Sebastian Hjalmarsson Clark has over 13 years’ experience in primary education and currently works as a Lead Practitioner for Teaching and Learning. As an SLE for Oracy and Dialogic Teaching, Sebastian has delivered extensive training and support to schools at leadership level on how to use talk strategies to increase uptake and attainment in the primary classroom. In 2018, he conducted an action research project entitled “Enhancing Pupil Engagement, Learning and Attainment through the Explicit Teaching of Oracy” which explored ways in which to create a framework for assessment in Speaking and Listening. In 2019, Sebastian collaborated with the DFE and carried out a randomised controlled trial aiming to improve approaches to formative assessment.  The study - “The Effect of Immediate Verbal Feedback Compared to Written Feedback on Reading, Writing and Maths” – was published as part of a wider DFE initiative to investigate ways to reduce teacher workload. Sebastian is looking forward to leading the Assessment Network to continue its ethos of sharing innovative ideas and good practice across the primary curriculum.

Assessment and SEND in mainstream schools with Margaret Mulholland

Teachers often feel they lack the required knowledge and time to support children with SEND well. Strengthening teacher confidence and competence to do this is important and Assessment Leads have a big role to play, bigger perhaps than we currently recognise and value.

This session will explore how effective assessment is the engine of adaptive teaching. We will dig deep to explore how teachers can systematically collect evidence to inform teaching and curriculum planning. With a particular focus on:

  • Assess, plan, do, review for all
  • Feedback from pupil to teacher
  • Systemic collaboration
  • Short cycle formative assessment for identifying strengths.

We will look at why these are important and how they can be more explicitly built into our current systems to strengthen classroom practice.

  • Unlocking your inner detective BERA
  • The Teacher handbook: SEND – a free online ‘bible’ for inclusive teaching (one click download if you are logged into NASEN or here on the ASCL website).

Incremental Coaching: Developing teachers

Incremental coaching is a form of teacher development based on a regular, frequent and ongoing cycle of short observations and focused follow-up coaching conversations.  The coaching conversations focus on one aspect of teaching that help teachers improve their practice. The aspect of practice is selected based on what the teacher needs to improve, and time is devoted to improving it before moving on to other areas of practice.

This course is aimed at leaders of teaching and learning who focus on teacher development. We will examine the following specific areas:

The lesson observation – technique and analysis
The follow-up coaching conversation
Determining effective action steps

Stop talking about wellbeing: Practical resilience strategies to support teacher workload

In an effort to get schools to think about how to care for their employees, wellbeing has been pushed to the top of the national agenda as the statistical rate of teachers leaving the profession reaches worrying levels and teachers' mental health becomes a major concern.

Although staff members are required to participate in wellbeing-related activities, they have little effect on their workload or capacity to perform what they were hired to do: teach children and young people. As a result, wellbeing has become a tokenistic characteristic within the education sector. Kat Howard looks to fundamentally rewrite this narrative through these 2 sessions.

Session 1 - 23rd Jan 2024, 8.30-10.00: Senior Leadership and workload

In this session, senior leaders will consider both their own workload and the related challenges, as well as the areas of review possible within current school practice that may mitigate against high teacher workload. With an exploration of the leading research in this area, the session will explore policy review and adaptation, logistical processes in-house including feedback loops and curriculum mechanisms that will not only benefit the workforce’s workload on a pragmatic level, but will likely lead to increased professional fulfilment and teacher retention. Leaders should expect to leave the session with clearly identified areas of enquiry which will form an action plan to identify their own priorities for their school setting.

The first session will include documents to act as a template for a gap task.

Ahead of Session 2, it would be helpful for those attending to submit your areas of focus.

Session 2 - 19th Mar 2024, 8.30-10.00: Senior and Middle Leadership and workload: sharing effective practice

In this session, senior leaders and invited subject leaders will have the opportunity to hear from the network in regards to how colleagues identified key priorities, gathered and triangulated evidence and data and enable discussion and challenge in regards to their next steps. Some school settings may have pilot studies or trials at this stage that they wish to share, but all attendees will leave the session with a theory of change formed around the identified priorities for their setting, and a cohesive timeline for the work to be undertaken to attend to that priority. An example theory of change model and template for implementation will be provided at the session.

The Science of Learning for School Leaders

Overview

The Science of Learning for Leaders is a new programme for school leaders within Hackney, looking at addressing how the science of learning can underpin a school’s processes for curriculum planning, assessment, teaching, and learning. This practical, hands-on programme will give delegates the opportunity to review their curriculum coherence across their school to ensure there is progression, clarity, and cohesion across subjects and across year groups.

Session 1: Wed, 8th Nov 2023, 8.30 - 9.30am

Session 1 will address what is an effective Knowledge Rich curriculum and delegates will explore recent findings from OFSTED. During this session, leaders will begin a self-audit of their curriculum structures, with an acute focus on 1 subject area to develop over the course of the year, leading to tangible improvements.

Session 2: Wed, 7th Feb 2024, 8.30 - 9.30am

Session 2 will explore how a school’s curriculum structure can support learning for the long-term and how to go about effective change. Delegates will begin to review their own in-school processes for planning to consider curriculum coherence and cohesion both within a year group and cross multiple year groups. We will also explore how to weave in regular, intelligent retrieval of prior content and refocus our learning from Session 1 on the specific subject area they are wanting to develop.

Session 3:  Wed, 24th Apr 2024, 8.30 - 9.30am

The 3rd session will review how the school’s approach to teaching and learning support the curriculum structure so that there is alignment across school planning processes and delivery of the curriculum. We will explore how assessment feeds into the designing of the curriculum so that it is fit for purpose. We will also review how this new learning impacts the improvement plan from Session 1 within their own contexts.

Session 4: Wed, 22nd May 2024, 8.30 - 9.30am

Session 4 will allow delegates to share the specific curriculum area they have developed over the course of the year and forward plan for future growth and development of the curriculum.
